While this BERTL report concentrates specifically on an individual device and is designed to pro-
vide the reader with an independent perspective on its relative strengths, weaknesses and value
proposition, the decision to buy, or not to buy, is not always “device-specific.” The brand behind
the device and how it is perceived in the marketplace is also extremely important. This is where
BERTL Brand Surveys come into play.
BERTL speaks to product buyers on a regular basis. In addition, BERTL conducts periodic sur-
veys of the digital imaging marketplace. The valuable feedback we receive from buyers and prod-
uct resellers is incorporated into our reports, in order to provide our subscribers with a perspective
on the manufacturer behind the device.
The table below shows feedback received in BERTL’s latest survey of this manufacturer’s
product(s). Note: Survey results change over time—the data level for this survey is shown at top.

Gone are the days where
color is regarded as a luxury
item in many industries.
Simply get handed two
property information sheets,
one printed in color and one
printed in black, and see
which of the two you look at
first; the property with the
green lawn, crystal-blue
pool and brightly colored
flowerbeds or the sheet with
a multitude of greys.
The driving force behind the
growth in office color is the
increased affordability and
productivity that are now
offered by color printer
manufacturers. Just four
years ago, you would
expect a 5ppm color printer
for the price of the 25ppm
color Lexmark C762 today.
Lexmark is also future proofing the
investment of the buyer by adding an
extensive upgrade path to the C762, with
features such as a 3,000 sheet finisher unit
for more flexible document production
capabilities and a multifunctional upgrade,
converts the device into a highly featured
network scanner, fax and color copier.
For those who do not need the extra upgrade
options Lexmark offers a lower priced C760
model, which provides the similar printing
capabilities as the C762 but does not offer the
multifunctional upgrade path.
Design Features:
The Lexmark C762 has a new default Print
Quality mode called 4800CQ with Pel
Synthesis. This mode simultaneously adjusts
dot size and shape while interpolating from
1200 x 600 dpi.
The maximum advertised engine speed is
25ppm (letter) in both color and monochrome
(23ppm A4 size). Paper is handled up to
legal/folio in the main trays. Like its
predecessor, most configurations of the C762
come with a powerful 600MHz processor (the
entry-level Lexmark C762 comes with a 500
MHz processor) and equipped with 128MB
RAM, expandable to 512MB. An optional hard
drive enables capabilities such as Proof Then
Print and Print On Demand.
The standard paper supply varies from 600
sheets (one 500-sheet drawer, plus a 100-
sheet bypass tray) to 3,100 sheets,
depending on the configuration. Maximum
upgraded paper supply is 3,100 sheets.
The Lexmark C762 comes standard with
three printer languages: PCL5c and 6
emulation, PostScript 3 emulation, and PDF
v. 1.2-1.3.

The Control Panel:
The Lexmark C762’s control panel is very
simple, consisting of only five buttons, plus a
status light. It features a two-line LED
display. The quality of the control panel has
been improved since the previous model with
hard plastic buttons replacing most of the
spongy buttons.
Navigation through the menu system is
simple, with users moving through the menu
levels using the ‘select’ and ‘return’ buttons.
There is no job reset/cancel job button which
we would have liked as an instant means of
users being able to cancel incorrect jobs.
Compatibility:
The Lexmark C762 is compatible with
Windows XP, 2000, 98, 95, Me, NT 4.0 and
Windows Server 2003.
It also works with a wide range of Unix, Linux,
Novell, IBM, Citrix MetaFrame and Macintosh
systems.
Connectivity:
Standard connection on the base model is via
parallel and USB 2.0. Higher configurations
also have 10/100BaseTX Ethernet capability
standard.

Installation:
It took just 10 minutes to install the Lexmark
C762. There was not the usual bewildering
array of consumable boxes. Packaging was
kept to a bare minimum with the consumables
already installed, with only the drum and
transfer belt protector wrapping having to be
removed. DHCP is supported so we simply
attached the device to the network for the
DHCP server to assign network settings. To
connect to the device, we installed the printer
driver and used Lexmark’s MarkVision
network management utility to set up the port.
IT managers will like the ability to
automatically install the printer driver onto
multiple remote PCs from their desktop as
shown in the screenshot below.
The process of setting up a multi-destination
installation was simple. The installation wizard
allowed us to browse across the network,
selecting the PCs we required. After adding
the user ID and password we could store the
name within a list for future use.
For example, the entire first floor of an office
could be stored as a single list on the IT
manager’s PC. When the next Lexmark
device is installed, you simply load the list
again and the driver is
installed on every PC
in a single process.
Black Only Driver
Option:
Within the installation
process, we could also
choose to install a
black only driver, rather
than the full color
driver. This allows IT
manager to place the
device into offices
where color and non
color authorised users
can share the printer.

Maintenance:
The Lexmark C762 has a maximum monthly
duty cycle of up to 100,000 pages per month,
which is impressive for a color printer in this
sector of the market and higher than any
competing devices offer. The print engine
uses four color imaging units in a line. Paper
makes a single pass high-speed under the
imaging units.
The front panel opens completely, providing
easy access to consumable items, as shown
opposite. The four color units slide in at the
top of the device, with a toner cartridge and
photoconductor unit which slot together.
The photoconductor and toner cartridge are
each contained in easy-to-change units. This
preserves the simplicity of all-in-one toner
cartridges while still allowing users to fully use
their consumables, instead of throwing away
a usable photoconductor when the toner
needs to be replaced.

If You Need More:
The Lexmark C762 can be
turned into a complete
multifunctional machine
capable of network scanning,
copy and fax with the
addition of the Lexmark
X4500 MFP upgrade.
Bundled together, the X4500
and C762 form the Lexmark
X762e, which has been reviewed separately
in BERTL’s Color At Work section.
To further expand the network scanning/
workflow capabilities of the X762e, Lexmark
also offers its Lexmark Document Distributor
(LDD) version 2.0 which allows users to
create complex workflow tasks under a
simplex icon on the touchscreen control panel
and much more.
For two-sided printing, a duplex unit is
available as an optional upgrade for
configurations that do not come with it
standard.
An 802.11b Wireless Print Adapter is
available to enable the Lexmark X762e to
function without being tethered to a cable.
(However, 802.11g would have been a
welcome addition). A parallel RS-232C port
can be connected as well.
Paper supplies can be upgraded with the
addition of optional 500-sheet drawers or a
2,000-sheet drawer. Maximum upgraded
paper supply is 3,100 sheets total. An
envelope drawer is also offered.
The Lexmark C762 can be equipped with an
optional finisher which provides corner
stapling, hole punching (two to four holes),
offset stacking and stacking for up to 3,000
sheets of unstapled, un-punched media. This
finisher can staple up to 30 sheets per set.
A five-bin mailbox is available, enabling users
to direct print jobs to different boxes and
lessen the possibility of document mix-ups.
The mailbox sits on top of the printer main
unit and can be installed in addition to the
finisher unit.
A hard drive is also available, providing
greater document storage and spooling
capabilities.
Also available are memory upgrades, in
16MB Flash, 32MB Flash, 256MB SDRAM
and 512MB SDRAM units.

Paper Handling:
Input:
The standard paper
supply on the Lexmark
C762 ranges from 600 to
3,100 sheets (including
the standard 100-sheet
multipurpose feeder).
The main paper trays
can accommodate paper
as heavy as 32 lb./120
gsm, up to legal size
(8.5” x 14”).
Paper supplies can be
increased to a maximum
of 3,100 sheets — a
higher upgraded supply than competing
devices offer. Users can install up to three
500-sheet drawers or the optional 2,000-
sheet drawer.
Their is no exit restraint built into the paper
drawers, which means that users can pull the
drawer out of the device relatively easily. This
could result in a tray being dropped and being
damaged.
Output:
The standard 250-sheet
output capacity can be
increased to a total of 3,900
sheets by adding the 3,000-
sheet finisher and the 650-
sheet Output Expander.
Duplex Unit:
The duplex unit (optional on
some configurations) in the
Lexmark C762 is located in
the front of the printer,
between the paper drawer
and the paper tray. This
allows users easy access to clear paper
misfeeds, if they occur, without having to pull
the entire machine away from the wall to
access the duplex paper path.

Web Management Tools:
Lexmark printers come with a powerful
network management utility called MarkVision
Professional, provided free. We have always
been impressed with the level of functionality,
integration and desk-based management
capabilities available to the end user (and the
IT Manager) through MarkVision.
The highly customisable capabilities that
MarkVision Professional gives to network
administrators include:
•
Check status of any network device
•
Group devices and users
•
Assign print permissions on a user basis
•
Set up scheduled events (such as
download and archive print stats)
•
Create customised alert sequences
specific to the device and action required
using MarkVision Messenger
MarkVision Messenger can be set to email
the network administrator (or anyone
specified) when a specific condition occurs,
such as low toner or paper jam. It can also
be set to automatically order supplies when
the Toner Low light comes on, and to
automatically log problems, such as paper
jams. See next page for screenshots.
The following pages includes a few
screenshots showing a small cross-section
the functionality of MarkVision.

Cost Control/Job Accounting:
While few dispute the potential benefits of
color - increased information retention,
elevated professional image, better document
legibility, higher response rates, etc… a
question remains. At what price do I get these
new benefits.
With the explosion of digital camera sales and
internet access now readily available from the
desktop, buyers are very conscious of the
temptation by staff to print non-business
related items on office color devices (family
pictures, humorous images sent to personal
email accounts, etc.), running up business
costs and nullifying the advantages that color
was supposed to generate.
Until recently, because of their high
monochrome print per page costs, most color
devices were purchased as supplementary
items, intended to provide color output
capability while leaving monochrome output
to more cost-effective units around the office.
Nowadays, the issue of how to control color
running costs is becoming more complex with
devices such as the Lexmark C762 being
considered as a replacement for existing
monochrome printers in the office.
This now poses a new problem for the
buyer/office administrator.
“How do I control
color output without interrupting day to day
monochrome usage?”
Lexmark offers a selection of solutions to
address this issue.
All Lexmark devices can be locked, forcing
the user to input a valid ID code before the
device can be used. Mark Vision Professional
allows the administrator to assign different
access criteria to each user. For example, a
user can be given unlimited access to
monochrome printing while being prevented
from creating color print output.
Because MarkVision Professional is a server-
based solution, the user code directory is
stored a central location, with devices
browsing to the central file to check on the
authenticity of a user. This allows
updates/new user ID codes to be added to
the list once, in a matter of seconds, rather
than having to send the data to each device
individually.
We would have liked the ability to specify a
print limit within the user ID profile.
For environments
requiring this extra
functionality Lexmark
offers a solution
through a third party
alliance with Pharos.

Lexmark has developed a feature called
ColorSaver Mode. When this is turned on,
text prints at a toner darkness setting of four,
while images and graphics print at a lower
toner darkness setting of one. Lexmark says
that this makes color images and graphics
lighter, while retaining dark, crisp
monochrome text, and that ColorSaver Mode
preserves the readability of documents while
saving up to 50% in running costs for color
toner on images and graphics, even if text,
graphics and images are all printed on the
same page.
The Lexmark C762 also has a Monochrome
Print Lock which is also set from the control
pane, or through MarkVision Professional.
Once set, it prevents the device from printing
in color and restricts users to monochrome
printing only. This can help reduce color
printing costs and cannot be overridden by
any other menu, driver or application setting.
There is also a monochrome-only print driver
available (see below) which can be given to
users who do not require color printing.
Coverage Estimator:
Lexmark includes a coverage estimator which
calculates the total amount of each of the four
colors based on the electronic print image
data in the print file.
When switched on each page has a large box
for each color with its coverage expressed as
a percentage.
Lexmark promotes this as a means of
estimating costs prior to conducting a print
run, and can be used by pay for print
environments to deliver a custom-priced
contract on a user by user basis.

Image Quality:
Print image quality on the Lexmark C762 was,
for virtually all business purposes good. Color
photographs reproduced well, with flesh tones
evenly applied and natural-looking, but a little
dull, even when printed on expensive glossy
media.
Color registration was good, with no
noticeable color overlap. Fine monochrome
line details printed very well, with no traces of
colors evident in greyscales.
High resolution Photoshop images
reproduced accurately albeit flat. Users
looking to produce in-house publications may
find the matt appearance less attractive than
some competing units with glossier
appearance. PowerPoint presentations
printed well, with bright colors and no visible
distortion, which will put the device in good
stead in the general office market where
standard business presentation/sales
documents will often be the main requirement
of the device. Text printed legibly to 4 point
size.
Color Controls:
Color controls vary according to which printer
driver is being used. The PostScript 3 driver
(illustrated below) lets users select from a
number of color options, including the ability
to manually set color contrast, color balance
and color matching. Toner darkness can be
manually set, and ColorSaver (which applies
less color to save money on color draft
prints).
Using RGB options, PostScript users can set
images, text and graphics color corrections
individually or as a set. Using CMYK options
allows users to set controls for images, text
and graphics at once. Options include Vivid
CMYK, Euro CMYK and US CMYK.
The PCL5c driver also allows manual color

Job Options/Print On Demand:
Both the PCL and PostScript drivers offer a
selection of delivery modes for printing.
Confidential Print:
requires users to enter a
PIN code at the device in order to print the
job.
Verify Print
sends a multiple-set print job to
the printer, but prints only the first set. This
allows users to proofread it before printing the
rest of the job. This may save on paper and
toner costs, if proofing the first print turns up
any errors.
Reserve Print
allows users to store print jobs
on the device itself, providing in essence a
print on demand capability.
Repeat Print
recalls jobs that have been
previously sent and prints them again.
Letterheads/Covers:
Neither print driver gives users the ability to
select to have the first sheet on different
paper than the rest of the document. This
may be a limitation in some offices which
often use letterhead to print the first sheet of a
document.
Overlay:
All of the device’s printer drivers support
overlay printing. In essence, an overlay is a
standard background that is stored on the
device and linked to the print file as it arrives
off the network. Overlays are commonly used
as a replacement for pre-printed forms and
letter-headed paper, allowing the user to
reduce processing and bandwidth by storing
the common element at the device.
