SAFETY SUMMARY

The following general safety precautions
must be observed during all phases of
operation, service, and repair of this unit.
Failure to comply with these precautions or
with specific warnings elsewhere in these
instructions violates manufacturer safety
standards and intended use of this unit.
Harman Specialty Group assumes no liability
for failure to comply with these require-
ments.

GROUND THE INSTRUMENT

To minimize shock hazard, the component
chassis and cabinet must be connected to an
electrical ground. The component is
equipped with a three-conductor AC power
cord. The power cord must be connected to
either an approved three-contact electrical
outlet or a three-contact-to-two-contact
adapter with the grounding-wire (green)
firmly connected to an electrical ground
(safety ground) at the electrical outlet. The
power jack and mating plug of the power
cord meet International Electro-technical
Commission (IEC) safety standards.

DO NOT OPERATE IN AN
EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE

Do not operate the unit in the presence of
flammable gasses or fumes. Operation of any
electrical instrument in such an environment
constitutes a definite safety hazard.

KEEP AWAY FROM LIVE CIRCUITS

Operating personnel must not remove unit
covers. Qualified maintenance personnel must
make component replacements and internal
adjustments. Do not replace components with
the power cord connected. Under certain
conditions, dangerous voltages may exist even
with the power cord removed. To avoid
personal injuries, always disconnect power and
discharge circuits before touching them.

DO NOT SERVICE OR ADJUST
ALONE

Do not attempt internal service or
adjustment unless another person capable of
rendering first-aid resuscitation is present.

DO NOT SUBSTITUTE PARTS OR
MODIFY INSTRUMENT

Because of the danger of introducing
additional hazards, do not install substitute
parts or perform any unauthorized
modification to the unit.

DANGEROUS PROCEDURE
WARNINGS

Warnings such as the example shown below
precede potentially dangerous procedures
throughout this document. Instructions
contained in warnings must be followed.
Dangerous voltages capable of causing
death are present in this unit. Use extreme
caution when handling, testing, or adjusting.

ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE

(ESD) PRECAUTIONS

• The following practices minimize

possible damage to circuit boards
resulting from electrostatic discharge or
improper insertion.

• Keep circuit boards in their original

packaging until ready for use.

• Avoid having plastic, vinyl, or Styrofoam

in the work area.

• Wear the supplied anti-static wrist strap.

• Discharge personal static before

handling circuit boards.

• Remove and insert circuit boards with care.

• When removing circuit boards, handle

only by non-conductive surfaces. Never
touch open-edge connectors except at a
static-free workstation.

• Minimize handling of circuit boards.

• Handle each circuit board by its body.

• Do not slide circuit boards over any

surface.

• Insert circuit boards with the proper

orientation.

• Use static-shielded containers for

handling and transporting circuit boards.

Preserving User Settings

The upgrade process will preserve user settings, except under the
circumstances listed below. Before upgrading the MC-4, create an
archive of user settings using the Configuration Tool available at
www.lexicon.com or the Installation Worksheet in the MC-4 User
Guide. This will expedite the reconfiguration of the MC-4 in the
event that user settings are not preserved.

The upgrade process will preserve user settings UNLESS:

The message “WAITING FOR DOWNLOAD” displays on the MC-4
front panel before the upgrade process begins.

The computer hard drive does not contain the 46kB of available
hard drive space required to preserve user settings.

You checked the “Skip Config Save” checkbox in the updater
window before beginning the upgrade.

A communication error occurs when user settings are sent to the
upgraded MC-4. Communication errors may occur if the serial
extension cable is disconnected, the MC-4 is powered off, or the
computer experiences a problem.

Note:

The MC-4 is designed to preserve the upgrade process during serial
communication failures. However, certain factors such as serial extension
cable type, serial extension cable length, and environmental conditions
sometimes cause communication failures. If this occurs, attempt to
upgrade the MC-4 again. If problems persist, contact your Lexicon dealer
or go to www.lexicon.com.

To upgrade the MC-4:

Note:

It will take about 45 minutes to upgrade the MC-4. Do not use the MC-4
while the upgrade is in progress.

1. Exit all computer programs.

2. Power off the MC-4 with the rear panel power switch.

3. Connect the male end of the serial extension cable to the RS-232

connector labeled 1 on the MC-4 rear panel.

4. Connect the female end of the serial extension cable to the appro-

priate connector on the computer.

If this is a USB connector, a USB-to-serial port adapter is

required. Refer to “Making Connections” on page 1 for
additional information.

5. Power on the MC-4 with the rear panel power switch.
