Installation and Operation Instructions
A Harman International Company
CONFIGURATION TOOL
DIGITAL CONTROLLERS AND RECEIVERS

ii
SAFETY SUMMARY
The following general safety precautions must
be observed during all phases of operation,
service, and repair of this unit. Failure to
comply with these precautions or with specific
warnings elsewhere in these instructions
violates manufacturer safety standards and
intended use of this unit. Harman Specialty
Group assumes no liability for failure to comply
with these requirements.
GROUND THE INSTRUMENT
To minimize shock hazard, the component
chassis and cabinet must be connected to an
electrical ground. The component is
equipped with a three-conductor AC power
cord. The power cord must be connected to
either an approved three-contact electrical
outlet or a three-contact-to-two-contact
adapter with the grounding-wire (green)
firmly connected to an electrical ground
(safety ground) at the electrical outlet. The
power jack and mating plug of the power
cord meet International Electro-technical
Commission (IEC) safety standards.
DO NOT OPERATE IN AN
EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE
Do not operate the unit in the presence of
flammable gasses or fumes. Operation of any
electrical instrument in such an environment
constitutes a definite safety hazard.
KEEP AWAY FROM LIVE CIRCUITS
Operating personnel must not remove unit
covers. Qualified maintenance personnel must
make component replacements and internal
adjustments. Do not replace components with
the power cord connected. Under certain
conditions, dangerous voltages may exist even
with the power cord removed. To avoid
personal injuries, always disconnect power and
discharge circuits before touching them.
DO NOT SERVICE OR ADJUST
ALONE
Do not attempt internal service or
adjustment unless another person capable of
rendering first-aid resuscitation is present.
DO NOT SUBSTITUTE PARTS OR
MODIFY INSTRUMENT
Because of the danger of introducing additional
hazards, do not install substitute parts or
perform any unauthorized modification to the
unit.
DANGEROUS PROCEDURE
WARNINGS
Warnings such as the example shown below
precede potentially dangerous procedures
throughout this document. Instructions
contained in warnings must be followed.
Dangerous voltages capable of causing death
are present in this unit. Use extreme caution
when handling, testing, or adjusting.
ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE
(ESD) PRECAUTIONS
• The following practices minimize
possible damage to circuit boards
resulting from electrostatic discharge or
improper insertion.
• Keep circuit boards in their original
packaging until ready for use.
• Avoid having plastic, vinyl, or Styrofoam
in the work area.
• Wear the supplied anti-static wrist strap.
• Discharge personal static before
handling circuit boards.
• Remove and insert circuit boards with care.
• When removing circuit boards, handle
only by non-conductive surfaces. Never
touch open-edge connectors except at a
static-free workstation.
• Minimize handling of circuit boards.
• Handle each circuit board by its body.
• Do not slide circuit boards over any
surface.
• Insert circuit boards with the proper
orientation.
• Use static-shielded containers for
handling and transporting circuit boards.

ABOUT THE CONFIGURATION TOOL
This configuration tool can be used to transfer a component config-
uration to a computer or to transfer a configuration stored on a
computer to a component. A stored configuration file serves as an
archive of user-defined settings. It can be emailed (for instance, to
Lexicon Customer Service, if troubleshooting issues arise). If the file
is saved in .txt format, it can also be printed.
Hardware and Software Requirements
The following items are needed to install and operate the
configuration tool:
* A USB-to-serial port adapter is required if the computer has only a USB
connector. It is not required if the computer has an RS-232 connector.
Refer to “Preserving User Settings” on page 3 for additional information.
The computer must meet ALL of the following requirements:
•
Windows® 95, 98, ME, 2000, or XP operating system
•
312kB of available hard drive space
•
RS-232 or USB connector*
The serial extension cable must meet the following requirements:
•
Straight-through male-to-female cable
•
DB-9 RS-232 connector (9-pin)
Making Connections
If the computer has only a USB connector, a USB-to-serial port
adapter is required to make the connection to the component. It is
not required if the computer has an RS-232 connector.
Certain USB-to-serial port adapters have been reported to be
incompatible with the upgrade kit. For a current list of known-
compatible adapters, visit the knowledgebase area of the Lexicon
website at www.lexicon.com/kbase.

Wiring for a 9-pin-to-9-pin serial connection requires a male-to-female
straight-through cable as shown in Figure 1 above.

Preserving User Settings
The Configuration Tool installation and configuration file transfer
processes will preserve user settings, except under the circum-
s t a n c e s l i s t e d b e l o w. B e f o r e i n s t a l l i n g o r o p e r a t i n g t h e
Configuration Tools program, create an archive of user settings
using the Installation Worksheets found in the Appendix section of
the component’s user manual. This will expedite the reconfigu-
ration of the component in the event that user settings are not
preserved.
The installation and file transfer processes will preserve user
settings UNLESS:
•
The computer hard drive does not contain the 312kB of available
hard drive space required to load the Configuration Tool program.
•
A communication error occurs when files are sent to the
component or computer. Communication errors may occur if the
serial extension cable is disconnected, the component or the
computer is powered off, or the computer experiences a problem.
Note:
The Configuration Tool program is designed to preserve configuration file
transfers during serial communication failures. But, certain factors such as
cable type, cable length, and environmental conditions sometimes cause
communication failures. If this occurs, attempt the file transfer again. If
problems persist, contact Lexicon Customer Service at 781-280-0300 or
go to www.lexicon.com.
TRANSFERRING CONFIGURATION FILES
When installed, the configuration tool can be used to transfer the
current component configuration to a computer or to transfer a
configuration stored on a computer to a component.
Note:
It is recommended that the component not be used for normal
operation during file transfers.
Transfer current configuration to a computer:
1. Exit all computer programs.
2. Power off the component with the rear panel power switch.
3. Connect the male end of the serial extension cable to the RS-232
connector labeled 1 on the component rear panel.
4. Connect the female end of the serial extension cable to the
appropriate connector on the computer.
If this is a USB connector, a USB-to-serial port adapter is
required. Refer to “Making Connections” on page 1 for
additional information.
