Safety Recommendations
— Prolonged use of vibrating or reciprocating tools may result in
vibration-induced circulation problems in the hands. Always follow safe operating procedures.
Using hand protection (i.e., insulated gloves) and taking frequent breaks can help minimize but not
guarantee against injury. Operating these types of tools in cold weather or with a tight grip will
reduce the period of operation before risking potential injury. Individuals with a tendency to suffer
from poor circulation, frequently cold fingers or itchy hands should closely monitor the condition of
their hands. If symptoms appear, seek medical advice immediately.

11
Introduction
The Gesswein New SZX Profiler is engineered and manufactured to a high
degree of precision and will provide many years of trouble-free service. Backed
by a limited warranty that covers wear parts for 90 days and overall balance of
parts for six months.
The DC electrically driven handpiece is designed to be used with the Power Hand
2X Single, Standard, Dual, Jewelers’ Micromotor, Power Carver II and Bright-
Cutting Controllers. These controllers convert the alternating current (AC) power
supply to a variable direct current (DC) by means of an I.C. transistorized auto-
matically controlled circuit.
The Gesswein Power Hand 2X handpiece series consists of nine models and eleven
head assemblies with maximum operating speeds ranging from 8,000 to 55,000rpm
and 0 to 117 strokes per second. All models are identified by their names, which are
engraved on the motor housings.

Stroke Adjustment
The New SZX Profiler has an adjustable
stroke of 0-1.6mm, measured at the Tool
Holder. However, the stroke will be greater
at the tool end. To adjust stroke, first
remove the top cover by firmly grasping
the knurled ring (see fig. 2) and unscrew-
ing in a counterclockwise direction.
Completely remove the top cover from the
handpiece motor. Next, loosen the Hex
Socket Set Screw (see fig. 3) located on
the side of the main eccentric shaft using
the Allen Wrench provided. Now line up
the mark on the Knurled Adjusting Ring
with the stroke setting marked in millime-
ters on the side of the main shaft. Finally,
tighten the Hex Socket Set Screw, and
firmly secure the handpiece Top Cover to
the motor by screwing in a clockwise direc-
tion.
4.
Tool Attachment
Loosen the Tool-Securing Set Screw
located on the Swing Arm (Tool Holder)
using the Tool Pin provided. Place the tool

Operating Procedure
With your New SZX Profiler adjusted for stroke and with a selected tool fitted, con-
nect the Gesswein Power Hand Controller to an electrical supply and the Profiler to
controller.
Set the Slide Rheostat on the Controller to “Low” or the “0” position. Put the Controller
Main Switch to the “ON” position, which lights up a pilot light that indicates your New
SZX Profiler is ready to use.
To increase the speed of the New SZX Profiler, move the Slide Rheostat toward High
or “10” and the desired reciprocating frequency. You can now begin working. When
work is completed, put the Main Switch to “OFF.”
To operate your handpiece using the optional Variable-Speed Foot Rheostat or
optional On/Off Foot Switch, please refer to the Power Hand 2X Controller Instruction
Manual for proper connection. The handpiece will not run until the foot rheostat/switch
is depressed. The rheostat provides infinitely variable speed control; the switch only
turns the handpiece on and off (operates at speed selected on controller).

Precautions
A.
Do not allow a tool to hammer excessively against a sidewall that is not being
polished or the handpiece bearings will be damaged.
B.
Make sure that the Top Cover is securely tightened; a loose cover will cause
excessive vibration and wear on bearing surfaces.
C.
Always unplug the New SZX Profiler from the Power Hand Controller by grip-
ping the plug end, not the cord.
D.
Be sure the air cooling vents, located under the rear cover, are kept open and
free of dust and grit.
E.
Do not allow abrasive particles or oil-abrasive slurry to enter the spindle and
Top Cover of the handpiece or handpiece motor.
F.
In the event the entire Swing Head of the handpiece must be removed from
the motor assembly, grasp the Motor Connecting Ring (see fig. 1) and pull
upward. To replace, again pull upward on the Motor Connecting Ring and fit
6
Replacement of Carbon Brushes
The motor in the New SZX Profiler uses a spring tension-type carbon brush
assembly. The approximate life of the brushes is 800-1,000 hours. Use the set of
two replacement carbon Brushes supplied with your handpiece when it becomes
necessary to replace worn brushes. (Brushes should be changed when hand-
piece is not running at maximum speed, or if it sounds as though it’s running out
of gas.) Please note that in the event you must change the brushes, it is impor-
tant that both be replaced at the same time. Replacement of only one carbon
brush will cause motor damage.
To replace worn carbon brushes, disconnect the Motor Cover by unscrewing it in
a counterclockwise direction. The motor brushes are now exposed. The worn
brush assemblies can be removed by using a small Phillips head screwdriver on
the screws that secure the assemblies (see fig. 6). The brush spring mount will
push the assembly out of the well so that it can then be lifted clear.
The two new carbon brushes should be installed by gently pushing them into the
brush well. When each assembly has been screwed in securely, replace the
Motor Cover and Power Cord.
Fig. 6
Maintenance
Dust Removal
From time to time it is necessary to clean the excessive dust that accumulates in the
Motor Cover. Unfasten the Motor Cover in a counterclockwise direction, and remove
excessive dust with a dry brush. If necessary, use a moistened cloth with detergent.
Never use thinners or alcohol.
Lubrication
Occasionally apply a small amount of Molybdenum grease to the Nylon Drive
Shoe located under the Top Cover. (see fig. 5).

Operating Procedure with Standard Controller
With your rotary handpiece fitted with a selected tool, connect the Gesswein
Power Controller to an electrical supply and the handpiece to one of the two
output sockets provided.
Set the Slide Rheostat on the Controller to “Low” or the “0” position. Put the
Controller Main Switch to the “ON” position, which lights up a pilot light that indi-
cates your rotary handpiece is ready to use.
To increase the speed of the rotary handpiece, move the Slide Rheostat toward
“High” or “10.” You can then begin working. When work is completed, put the
Main Switch to “OFF.”
To operate your rotary handpiece using the optional Variable-Speed Foot
Rheostat or optional On/Off Foot Switch, please refer to the Power Hand 2X
Controller Instruction Manual for proper connection. The handpiece will not
rotate until the foot rheostat/switch is depressed. The rheostat provides infinitely
