Introduction
The Gesswein Power Hand 2X BZX Belt Sander is manufactured to the highest
standards available to provide many years of trouble-free service. Backed by a
limited warranty that covers wear parts for 90 days and overall balance of parts
for six months.
This DC electrically driven handpiece is designed to be used with Gesswein
Power Hand 2X Single, Standard, Dual, Jewelers’ Micromotor, Power Carver II
and Bright-Cutting Controllers. These controllers convert the Alternating Current
(AC) power supply to a variable Direct Current (DC) by means of an I.C. “transis-
torized” automatically controlled circuit.

General Use
The Gesswein Belt Sander is designed to use sanding belts of 4, 6, and 8mm widths.
Select a 6mm or 8mm wide belt for the Straight Belt Arm supplied with the Belt
Sander. Hold the Belt Sander in your hand with your index finger on the Release
Knob, and pull back the spring-loaded arm.
Place the selected belt over the Drive Pulley and the Belt Arm Pulley (see fig. 3).
Release your index finger from the Release Knob, and allow the spring-loaded
arm to extend fully for proper belt tension.

Operating Procedure with Standard Controller
With your Belt Sander fitted with a selected belt, connect the Gesswein Power
Hand Controller to an electrical supply and the Belt Sander to the Controller.
Set the Slide Rheostat on the Controller to “Low” or the “0” position. Put the
Controller Main Switch to the “ON” position, which lights up a pilot light that indi-
cates your handpiece is ready to use.
To increase the speed of the handpiece, move the Slide Rheostat toward “High”
or “10.” You can then begin working. When work is completed, put the Main
Switch to “OFF.”
To operate your Belt Sander using the optional Variable-Speed Foot Rheostat
or optional On/Off Foot Switch, please refer to the Power Hand 2X Controller
Instruction Manual for proper connection. The handpiece will not rotate until the
foot rheostat/switch is depressed. The rheostat provides infinitely variable speed
control; the switch only turns handpiece on and off (operates at speed selected on
control unit).

5.
Precautions
A.
Before operating your Belt Sander, be sure the desired belt is properly
secured around both pulleys.
B.
Do not attempt to change belts while the handpiece is operating.
C.
During use, avoid pushing too hard on the work tool or exceeding torque
capacity of Belt Sander motor.
D.
Always disconnect the Belt Sander from your Gesswein Controller by the
plug, not the cord.
E.
Do not use oil or lubricants of any kind. Doing so will cause damage to the
handpiece bearings.
F.
Do not subject power cord on handpiece to sharp bending or rough treatment.
Such treatment could cause the cord wires to be broken.
G.
Under normal circumstances, the Belt Sander will not overheat. If, howev-
er, your Belt Sander does overheat, please contact the Gesswein Repair
Department.

Maintenance
Changing the Belt Arm
To change Belt Arms, you must first remove the belt that is in place on the Belt
Arm (see General Use). Once the belt has been removed, pull the Belt Arm out
of the Belt Sander main body (see fig. 4) and replace with selected Belt Arm and
appropriate belt.
Changing Arm Pads
If the Belt Arm Support Pad requires changing, remove the worn pad from the
Belt Arm, and replace with a new Belt Arm Support Pad by removing the self-ad-
hesive backing and placing in the same position.
Changing Belt Arm Pulley
To replace the Belt Arm Pulley, unfasten the Belt Arm Screw (see fig. 5) located on
the top of the Belt Arm. Gently spread the two plates sufficiently apart to remove
the old pulley, and replace with a new one. Securely refasten the Belt Arm Screw.
Lubrication
It is not necessary to lubricate the Gesswein Belt Sander.
Cleaning
It may be necessary on occasion to blow accumulated dirt and grit away from the
area surrounding the Drive Pulley. This can be facilitated by first removing the
Protection Cover (squeeze sides with thumb and forefinger to remove).
When external surfaces of your Belt Sander become dirty, use a cloth slightly
saturated with a neutral cleaning liquid. Do not use volatile liquids such as paint
thinner or alcohol.
