Introduction
The VISIX
™
VX-VSS-20 Stereoscopic camera is a special purpose, low-cost people counting smart camera, combining
state-of-the art 3D imaging technology with intelligent video analytics capability to provide remarkable people
counting accuracy. The VX-VSS-20 camera includes high-performance advanced analytics as a standard feature,
improving count accuracy when compared to the current generation of thermal and stereoscopic cameras. The
device has a high-quality video analytic system and maintains excellent tracking performance even in the most
challenging lighting conditions or when one object is partially obscured by another.
The camera utilizes dual-lens binocular stereoscopic technology with 3D head detection and 3D tracking to obtain
accurate real-time trajectories of all moving objects within its monitoring scope. The device than analyzes this
trajectory data to achieve high-precision people counting. The VX-VSS-20 is suitable for high-traffic environments
where people counting is required such as shopping malls, supermarkets, subway stations, bus terminals, secure
entrances
, etc…
In conjunction with 3xLOGIC’s VIGIL video management suite of products
, comprehensive data analysis and query
processes can be easily established to help bolster loss-prevention capability and provide you with invaluable
insights into your business via advanced reporting in VIGIL Client or VIGIL Trends.

Installation
3.1
Installation Steps
Be certain to mount the cameras as described. Failure to mount the camera as per the instructions may cause loss
of accuracy. The recommended mounting process is outlined below:

1.
Keep the 3xLOGIC logo facing the same direction as the Front arrow indicator on the back of the device.
See below example for reference:
Figure 3-4
Front Arrow and 3xLOGIC Logo
2.
Make sure the camera is mounted vertically above the passenger flow (90°, vertical to the ground).
Reference the below example:
Figure 3-5
Passenger Flow (perpendicular to the door
)
3.
For some scenarios where there are multiple cameras, mount the cameras as per the two below
guidelines:
►
If there are turnstiles, each camera should be mounted to monitor a specific turnstile
Figure 3-6
Sketch map of multiple cameras installation
►
If there is no turnstile, mount the cameras in one line, and make sure the cameras have the same
focal length. Then, keep a proper distance between each camera according to the overlap (see the
yellow area below) of the adjacent two cameras’ counting width. The suggested overlapping length is
between 0.2-0.5m.

2.
Avoid obstacles such as glass door, shield doors and turnstile that block the camera. For each divided
passageway, mount one camera directly above.
Figure 3-12
Avoiding Obstacles Within Field-of-Vision
3.
The camera should be mounted as close as possible to the passageway without obstacles obscuring its
field-of-vision. Remove any obstacles or adjust the camera mounting position if necessary.
Meanwhile, to prevent miscounts, if there is a sliding or automatic door onsite, make sure the
trajectory of the door does not overlap with the detection line. The counting mechanism may be
falsely triggered by the door opening and closing

Identifying and Configuring Camera
4.1
Identifying the Camera on Local Network
Using the 3xLOGIC Camera (VISIX-IP) Setup Utility is recommended for any network environment as it will find all
VISIX cameras across multiple subnet masks, utilizing mDNS search discovery. Camera information such as IP
Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway Settings will be displayed and can be edited from this utility. To search for a
device, launch the utility. Download the utility
here
or contact your 3xLOGIC representative for the latest version.
Note:
VSXIP Utility v10.10.0025
or newer is
required
for detection of the VX-VTOF-1.
Steps:
1.
Click on
Detect Online Devices/ Change IP Address
to proceed to the Online Devices window.
Figure 4-1
: 3xLOGIC Camera Setup Utility - Detecting Online Devices
After clicking
Detect Online Devices/ Change IP Address
on the main page you will be taken to the
Online Devices
window. A list of all VISIX devices discovered on your network will be visible.
2.
To select a device, click on the desired device in the generated menu under the
Select Online Devices
area.
3.
To change an IP address for a selected VISIX camera in the
Detect Online Devices
window, select the
desired camera, click on the
Change IP Address
button. The fields under the
Configure IP Address
area
will un-grey to allow for manual editing of camera IP addresses as well as other settings.

entrance/exit. See the example below for more detail:
Figure 4-3
Calibration
Note:
If auto calibration fails, switch to [Manual] and input the measured “Height”, then
click [Calibration].
3.
Detection line: Move the detection line to the proper location (about 0.5m from the door). Adjust the
length of detection line to the door’s width by dragging
the line ends. See the below example for
reference:

4.4
Interfacing People Counting Rule with VIGIL Server via Analytics Bridge
After adding the camera to VIGIL Server, the final step required is to interface the camera’s people counting rule
with VIGIL Server. This will allow the VIGIL Server to receive the people counting data from the camera and insert it
into the VIGIL database. To begin:
1.
Navigate to
Start > All Programs>VIGIL
and click
VIGIL Analytics Bridge
. If the Analytics Bridge is not
installed, contact a 3xLOGIC support representative to receive the latest version.
The Analytics Bridge main screen is pictured below. All configuration of the Analytics Bridge takes place from this
screen.
Figure 4-7
Figure 4-3: VIGIL Analytics Bridge Main UI
To begin configuration of the VX-VSS-20 camera within VIGIL Analytics Bridge:
1.
Click
Add
Device
.
Figure 4-8
Adding a Device to VIGIL Analytics Bridge
The
Add/Edit Camera
window will appear, shown below.
1.
Select the VIGIL Server camera channel associated with the VX-VSS-20 camera from the
VIGIL Camera
drop-down.
2.
Set the
Device Type
to
3xLOGIC VISIX-IP.
NOTE:
The
Device Type
setting must correspond with the
Type
setting configured for this
device in VIGIL Server
’
s
Network Camera
settings (see Fig 4-3). These values must be set to
3xLOGIC-VISIX-IP
in both VIGIL Analytics Bridge and VIGIL Server to allow for successful
operation. This setting should be automatically configured in VIGIL Server when adding the
camera with the VISIX IP Setup Utility but if you are experiencing issues, confirm the device
type settings are set to
3xLOGIC VISIX-IP
in both applications.

6.
Toggle
Enable
for all rules you wish to interface with the VIGIL Server.
Note:
Toggling
Alarm
on
will enable alarms in VIGIL Server for the selected rule. If
Alarm
is not toggled,
only rule data will be inserted to the VIGIL DB.
VCM Sync
(enabled by default) will enable rule data
syncing with VIGIL Central Management. If no VCM is available, this option is ignored.
7.
Click
OK
after detecting. The
Add/Edit Device
window will close
.
8.
On the main screen, click
Save Changes.
Save Changes
will only appear when a camera has been added or
edited. All new rule settings will be pushed to VIGIL Server.
