Chapter 1 – Device description
Intended Use
The MELA
dest
65 water distiller produces distilled water.
Functional principle
This practical water distillator produces water of the highest quality in accordance with what represents
one of the oldest methods of water treatment. When the device is activated, the water temperature
increases and escaping gases are boiled, then led through an opening. The water temperature increases
to 100°C and begins to boil. During evaporation, the chemicals, salts and soiling remain in the container.
The stream flows through the cooling coil system in the upper section where it cools and condenses into
distilled water.

Fitting the glass flask
1.
Remove all the individual parts from the glass flask carefully.
2.
Remove the packaging from the individual parts.
3.
Place the glass flask in the plastic guard ring.
4.
Loosen a screw on the metal collar on the neck of the glass flask.
5.
Place the collar on the neck of the glass flask in such a way that the other screws on the collar lie
exactly opposite the spout cap (pos. a).
6.
Refasten the metal collar with both screws.
PLEASE NOTE
Do not overtighten the screws when tightening.
7.
Fill the glass flask 3/4 full with warm tap water. Add 1-2 drops of washing-up liquid and clean the
inside of the glass flask.
8.
Afterwards, rinse and clean the glass flask thoroughly with clear water.
9.
Place the cover (pos. b.) on the glass flask in such a way that the spout remains open.

Before commissioning
Cleaning the distilling chamber
Although the distilling chamber of the MELA
dest
65 has been cleaned with the greatest of care,
manufacturing, packaging and dispatch procedures could result in the presence of harmless residues of
various substances. As a result, the distilled water produced during initial commissioning could assume an
undesired odour. To eliminate all odour-generating factors, proceed as follows:
1.
Setup the water distiller.
2.
Remove the connection cable from the distilling chamber.
3.
Remove the upper section of the water distilling chamber and fill with c. 0.5 L tap water.
4.
Return the upper section to the distilling chamber and connect the connection cable to the
bushing on the side wall of the chamber.
5.
Replace the glass flask laterally rotated without the adapter cover under the distilling chamber
discharge opening and plug the plug into the socket.
6.
Press the START/RESET button to activate the water distiller.
The ventilator motor begins to run.
The water distiller deactivates automatically after the water has boiled (no steam egress from the
upper section discharge opening.
7.
Remove the mains plug and empty the glass flask.
The distilling chamber is now flushed and ready for commissioning.
Checking the cover seal in the upper section of the distilling chamber
Before initial commissioning and every further use of the device, check the correct position of the cover
seal in the upper section of the distilling chamber.
The seal may not present any uneven surfaces and must lay entirely flat so that it maintains the seal.
Otherwise, boiling water could leave the upper section and e.g. flow onto the work surface.
If the seal does not lay flat, press with the hand. Do not use any sharp objects.

Producing distilled water
DANGER!
The water is very hot. Steam can be emitted from the upper section.
Danger of burns.
Never remove the upper section if the ventilator motor is running.
Allow the water distiller to cool for 30 minutes before removing the upper section.
Proceed as follows to produce distilled water:
1.
Remove the mains plug and disconnect the connecting cable from the bushing of the distilling
chamber.
2.
Remove the upper section of the water distiller.
3.
Fill the distilling chamber up to the upper marking with c. 4 L tap water.
PLEASE NOTE
The use of hot water reduces the length of the process.
4.
Replace the upper section on the distilling chamber and reconnect the connection cable to the
distilling chamber bushing.
PLEASE NOTE
Check the seal in the upper section of the distilling chamber before every use. See:
Chapter 2 –
Commissioning
, p. 7.
5.
Place the glass flask (laterally rotated) under the distilling chamber discharge opening.
6.
Plug the mains plug into the mains socket.
7.
Press the START/RESET button. The ventilator motor in the upper section of the distilling
chamber begins to run.
Once the cycle has finished, the water distiller will switch off automatically. The distilled water in
the glass flask is ready to use. Close the lateral opening with the adapter cover.
8.
Remove the mains plug from the socket after use.

9.
Dry the inside of the distilling chamber with a cloth to prevent corrosion.
The conductivity meter MELAtest
®
60 from MELAG can be used to check the conductivity
of the water thus produced (aqua dest).
Cleaning the distilling chamber
Before cleaning the water distilling chamber, please observe the following:
Clean the inside of the distilling chamber with lukewarm tap water and a sponge to remove the
deposits from the distilling chamber. With stubborn soiling / deposits on the inside walls, use only a
mild stainless steel cleaning medium, with a pH value between 5 and 8 e.g. Sidol.
Clean the inside of the distilling chamber following heavy limescale deposits or after 6 months at the
latest with MELAd
est
cleaning fluid.
WARNING
If water comes into contact with the electric connections, this can result in the short-
circuiting of the water distiller.
Never immerse the distillation chamber in water.
