                           2 Safety

2 Safety

The  apparatus  is  constructed  in  accordance  with  state-
of-the  art  technology  and  recognized  technical  safety
regulations.
Nevertheless risks and danger can arise from the appara-
tus:
•  if the apparatus is not used according to instructions.
•  if the apparatus is operated by insufficiently trained
personnel.

2.1 Symbols

Stop

Information on the dangers which can lead to great damage
to property or to severe or life-threatening injuries.

Warning

Information on the dangers which can lead to damage to
one’s health or to damage to property.

Please note

Information which indicates technical requirements.  Non-
compliance can lead to disturbance, uneconomical ope-
ration or production losses.

2.2 Demands on the operator

The apparatus may only be used by persons who have an
overview of the dangers which can develop when operating
the apparatus.

2.3 Regulation use

The Recirculating Chiller is conceived and built as a piece
of laboratory equipment.  Its regulation use is the cooling
of closed cycles (e.g. rotary evaporators, reaction vessels
...).

The regulation use of the Recirculating Chiller also includes
its care.

2 Safety

2.4 Nonregulation use

Any and every use other than the above-mentioned as well
as any and every application which does not correspond
to  the  technical  data  is  a  misapplication.    The  operator
bears the sole risk for any possible damage traced back
to such a use.
In particular, the following uses are improper:

Use of the apparatus in rooms which require explosion-
proof apparatus.

2.5 Safety measures

The  wearing  of  personal  protective  equipment  such  as

safety glasses

 is necessary.

These operating instructions must, as a component of the
Recirculating Chiller B-740 be available at all times to the
operating personnel at the place of use of the apparatus.
The operator is responsible for the instruction of his or her
personnel.  For this purpose these operating instructions
may be ordered in other languages.
The  operator  is  to  inform  the  manufacturer  immediately
about all safety related incidents which take place during
operation of the apparatus.

2.6 Safety elements

The apparatus is fitted with a thermal overload protection
for the compressor and the pump.
The minimum quantity of cooling liquid is controlled by a
niveau sensor..

3 Function

The  Büchi  Recirculating  Chiller  B-740  is  a  closed-circuit
cooler  for  use  with  rotary  evaporators.  The  two  models
are distinguished by their outputs.  The 800 watt version
is optimal for cooling one laboratory rotary evaporator, the
1400 watt version is sufficient for cooling two rotary evapo-
rators. The 2500 watt version has enough cooling capacity
to perfectly fit to Rotavapor R-220.

The temperature range extends from -10°C to 20°C, alt-
hough heating is not possible.  The B-740 regulates the
temperature to within +/- 1 K exactly.  The desired value
is simply entered with two keys (UP and DOWN) and can
be easily read from the LCD display (desired and actual
temperatures).

The environmentally-friendly refrigerant R134a is used as
the refrigerating medium.

Check whether the voltage of the socket outlet is the same
as the voltage given on the apparatus plate.  Do not turn
the apparatus on before the refrigerant has been added
and the rotary evaporator is connected.

The apparatus must have a minimum distance of 40 cm
between itself and the wall, both in front and behind (suf-
ficient cooling).

•  Place the B-740 on a horizontally level, solid base

•  Connect out flow and return flow connections of the
B-740 with the cooler of the rotary evaporator.  Only
use hoses which can withstand min. -10°C and 1 bar
pressure and secure these with the usual hose clamps.

• Close the drain cock

•  Fill the cooling liquid in the filling connections (approx.
2/3 of the inspection glass level)  We recommend a
mixture of ethylene glycol 30/70, which does not freeze
   until -15°C

•  Connect B-740 to electricity supply

To avoid the rattling of the compressor heating when the
chiller is started, please consider the following:

•  Connect the chiller to the power supply at least 1 hour

before start-up, but do not switch it on, yet.

•  Keep the chiller connected to the power supply during

the entire operation.

•  After  the  power  supply  was  interrupted,  connect  the

chiller to the power supply at least 1 hour before start-
up, but do not switch it on, yet.

6 Maintenance

6 Maintenance

All  information  which  is  directed  at  maintaining  the  Re-
circulating  Chiller  in  an  operationally  reliable  condition  is
to observed.  This also includes a periodic cleaning and
inspection for possible damage.

6.1 Cleaning

The housing is to be cleaned with a damp cloth without
the use of solvents and to be inspected visually for damage
(operating elements, plug).

Empty contaminated cooling liquid by means of the drain
cock and renew.

6.2 Customer service

by authorized service personnel.  These are persons with
a sound technical training and knowledge of the dangers
which  can  result  from  not  following  safety  precautions.
Büchi  customer  service  centers  have  apparatus-specific
service  manuals  which  are  available  only  to  authorized
personnel.

The addresses of official Büchi customer service centers
are given on the last jacket page of these operating instruc-
tions. Büchi company customer service is available for the

7.1 Storage/shipping

The cooling liquid is to be drained before storage or ship-
ping.  The apparatus is to be stored in the original packaging
in a dry location.  Shipping is also to be done in the original
packaging.

7.2 Disposal

In order that the apparatus be disposed of in the most
proenvironmental manner possible, there is in Chapter
8.2, Materials used, a list of the most important parts.
In this way it is ensured that the parts can be separated
and recycled.

For the disposal of electronic components we refer to re-
gional and local disposal laws and regulations.
