Up and Running

1. Ensurethewetbulb’swickisclean.Then,fillthereservoirwithdistilledwater.
2. PlacetheWB-300intheworkareainasafelocationapproximately3.5feetoff

theground.

3. TurntheinstrumentOnbypressingI/OEnterkey.

• Ifthebatteryvoltagedisplayedduringthepower-onsequenceislessthanorequalto

6.4volts,replaceorrechargethebatteries.

4. UsingtheArrowkeys,selectthedesiredmeasurement/parameterscreen.
5. Allow10minutesforthesensorstostabilizetotheenvironmentbeforetaking

readings.

Check wick and fill natural wet bulb

TheWB-300usesacottonwickimmersedintoareservoircontainingdistilledwater.Ordinary

tapwatershouldnotbeused,asthecontaminantsthatareleftbehindafterevaporationwill

shortenthelifeofthewickandcausehighreadings.Ifthewickisdiscoloreditshouldbe

replaced.Toreplacethewick,slidetheoldwickoffthetopofthesensor.Placeanewwickover

thesensor,makingsurethatthebottomofthewickisdowninthereservoir.

Theunitoperatesusingamembranekeypadwith4keys.Thekeyresponds

whenthekeyisreleasedwhileallotherkeysrespondwhenthekeyispressed.

Turning on:PressandreleasetheI/Oenterkeytopoweron.The

Instrumentname(WIBGET),revisionnumber,andbatteryinformation

appearsduringstart-up.
Turning off: HoldtheI/Okeydownwhileacount-down3-2-1occursinthe

lowerlefthandcornerofthedisplay.
Enter setup changes: WhileinSetupscreen,presstoenter(orselect)

setupchanges.

Setup

Thekeyallowschangingthesetupparameters.Twoparametersare

available:CelsiusorFahrenheitandlanguageselection.
Setup:  Presssetuptoaccesstheparameters.Usethearrowkeysto

switchbetweenthetwoparameters.Presstheenterkeytochangethe

Natural Wet Bulb Thermometer 

Thenaturalwetbulbthermometergivesanindicationoftheeffectsofhumidityonanindividual.

Relativehumidityandairflowaretakenintoaccountbymeasuringtheamountofevaporative

coolingtakingplaceatathermometercoveredwithamoistenedwick.TheWB-300usesa

cottonwickimmersedintoareservoircontainingdistilledwater.Ordinarytapwatershouldnot

beused,asthecontaminantsthatareleftbehindafterevaporationwillshortenthelifeofthewick

andcausehighreadings.Ifthewickisdiscoloreditshouldbereplaced.Toreplacethewick,

slidetheoldwickoffthetopofthesensor.Placeanewwickoverthesensor,makingsurethat

thebottomofthewickisdowninthereservoir.

Globe Thermometer 

Theglobethermometergivesanindicationoftheradiantheatexposureonanindividualdue

toeitherdirectlightorhotobjectsintheenvironment.Thisisaccomplishedbyplacinga

temperaturesensorinsideablackenedcoppersphereandmeasuringthetemperaturerise.The

WBGTindexisbasedontheresponseofa6inchdiameterglobe.TheWB-300usesa2inch

diameterglobeforafasterresponsetime.Thetemperatureofthe2inchglobeiscorrelated

tomatchthatofa6inchglobe.Asanoption,asensorarraywitha6inchdiameterglobeis

available.

Dry Bulb Thermometer 

Thedrybulbthermometermeasurestheambientairtemperature.Thismeasurementisusedin

theoutdoorWBGTcalculationwhenahighsolarradiantheatloadmaybepresent.Theseriesof

whiteplatessurroundingthesensorshielditfromradiantheat.

TheWB-300portableheatstressmonitorcomputestheWetBulbGlobeTemperature(WBGT).

TheWBGTisanacceptedmeasurementfordeterminingtheheatstresslevelimposedonan

individualinagivenenvironment.
TheWB-300measuresthreeparameters:

Ambientordrybulbtemperature(DB)

Naturalwetbulbtemperature(WB)

Globetemperature(G)

Wet Bulb Globe Temperature 

TheWBGTisaweightedaverageofthethreetemperaturesensorsusingthefollowing

formulas:

WBGT(indoor)=0.7WB+0.3G(denotedas"WBGTi"onthedisplay)

WBGT(outdoor)=0.7WB+0.2G+0.1DB(denotedas"WBGTo"onthedisplay)

NOTE:  The resulting WBGTi/WBGTo can be compared to indices of  

work-rest regimens (or stay times) based upon the work loads.

Whilepoweredon,pressthesetupkeytochangethetemperatureunits(

Placing the WB-300 on-site for monitoring/testing

TheWB-300shouldbeplacedataheightof3.5feet(1.1m)forstandingindividualsor2

feet(.6m)forseatedindividuals.Tripodmountingisrecommendedtogettheunitaway

fromanythingthatmightblockradiantheatorairflow.A1/4"x20threadedbushingonthe

bottomoftheinstrumentallowsmountingtoastandardphotographictripod.Donotstand

closetotheunitduringsampling.
Makesurethatthewetbulbreservoirisfilledwithdistilledwaterandthatthecottonwick

iscleanandfullywetted.Afteraddingwaterorplacingtheunitinanewenvironment,

allowtenminutesfortheglobeandwetbulbreadingstostabilize.
Aseriesofdashesappearinthedisplayifoneofthefollowingoccur:

•Thetemperatureisoutsideofitsallowablerange

•Atemperaturesensorhasfailed

Operational Check

Averificationmodule,3MID:70071581246,maybeusedtochecktheoperationofthe

WB-300. Remove the top sensor bar and plug the verification module into the top of the

unit. With the WB-300 set to read in degrees Celsius, verify that the displayed readings

match those printed on the module within +/-0.5

o

C.

Ifthereadingsarenotwithinthe+/-0.5

o

Ctolerance,thenhavetheunitservicedand

calibrated.

Power Options

Thereare3optionsforpoweringtheWB-300:a9-voltalkalinebattery,aNiMH(NickelMetal

Hydride)rechargeable6-cellbatterypack,andanACadapter.Adooronthebackoftheinstru-

mentallowstheuseraccesstothe9-voltbattery.Therechargeablebatterypackislocatedinside

oftheunit.Iftherechargeablebatterypackeverneedstobereplaced,itcanbeaccessedby

removingthescrewsfromthebottompaneloftheunit.
The2-positionswitchlocatedinthebatterycompartmentmustbesetbytheuserifthepower

supplymethodischanged.Theuppositionisforthe9-voltbattery.Thedownpositionallows

foreithertheACadapterortherechargeablebatteries.TheACadapterwilltricklechargethe

rechargeablebatteriesiftheyareinplaceoritwillsimplyallowforlinepoweroperationoftheunit.

9-V Alkaline Battery Replacement  

The9-voltbatteryshouldbereplacedortheNiMHbatterypackshouldberechargedwhenthe

voltagedropsbelow6.4volts.Thebatteryvoltageisdisplayedwhentheinstrumentisturned

on.Whileturnedon,thebatteryvoltagecanbedisplayedatanytimebypressingtheupor

downarrowkeystomovethroughthedisplayuntilthebatteryvoltagescreenappears.If,while

operating,thebatteryvoltagedropsbelow6.4volts,thedisplaywillautomaticallyswitchto

thedisplayshowingthebatteryvoltagealongwithalowbatterymessage.Afteralowbattery

occurs,theunitwillcontinuetooperateforapproximately8hours.Whenthebatteryvoltage

fallsto6.2voltsorbelow,theunitwillautomaticallyturnoff.

NiMH Battery Pack

 

TheNiMHrechargeablebatterypackischargedintheinstrumentusing120VACto9VDC

adapter.Adischargedbatterypackrequiresachargeof16hours.LeavingtheACadapter

pluggedinforextendedlengthsoftimeorwhenoperatingtheinstrumentwillnotharmthe

rechargeablebatteries.
